EPA established drinking water regulations for ten inorganic substances and radionuclides that became effective on June 24, 1977. As a result of these new regulations, many communities may be required to construct new treatment facilities or to modify existing ones. This paper on arsenic and selenium is a second of a series that reviews existing treatment technology for meeting the EPA drinking water regulations. The effectiveness of conventional coagulation, lime softening, ion exchange, activated carbon, reverse osmosis, and electrodialysis for the removal of the contaminants are discussed. The information consists of data from a general literature review and EPA's recent work on metals removal by conventional treatment.
Caption title. "July 1978." "This publication is 2nd in a series that are being published in the Journal of American Water Works Association, pp. 379-393, July 1978"--Technical report data. "This second article of a series outlines specific treatment technology for arsenic and selenium removal from potable water. The first article, which appeared in the February 1978 issue of the Journal [JAWWA], discussed fluoride and nitrate removal. Subsequent articles will review the treatment technology for the six other NIPDWR-regulated inorganic contaminants and radionuclides"--Page 379. Includes bibliographical references (pages 392-393).
