Abstract
A Volunteer Lake Monitoring Program was initiated by the Illinois EPA in 1981. Citizens were trained to measure water transparency using a Secchi disc. They also measured total depth and recorded field observations from a boat at three sites on their chosen lake. This report details the methodology and results for the 1981 volunteer program and contains a primer to provide the non-technical person with a basic understanding of Illinois lakes, factors affecting their water quality, and actions that can be taken to protect and enhance them.
