Abstract
Lake circulation studies were directed toward Lake Superior for the purpose of broadening the quantitative understanding of large-scale circulation patterns induced by wind and atmospheric pressure variations over lakes under homogeneous and stratified conditions. One phase considers the numerical and physical modelling of lake circulation under uniform density conditions. The effects of lake geometry and wind stress distributions on the movement of water are considered. Coriolis forces were considered in the models. The second phase involves the analysis and interpretation of field observations of currents and temperatures for the central region of Lake Superior, between the Keweenaw Peninsula and Isle Royale during seasons when lake stratification conditions predominate. Bathythermography data and airborne infrared surface temperature surveys were collected at the same time to permit the investigators to make inferences about the temperature structure of the interior of the lake, given only the surface temperature pattern.
