Abstract
Knowledge of the amine content present during water renovation processes involving chlorination is important to define more adequately the content of a matrix now described only as 'combined residual chlorine' or 'chlorine produced oxidants' and because of the variation in disinfectant capability and other chemical and biological activities of the chloramine species that are generated. However, the presence of 'organic nitrogen' and the instability of many organic chloramines continue to challenge the analyst. A technique has been developed for the analysis of chloramine and organic chloramines present in water using 2-mercaptobenzothiazole as the derivatizing agent. The resulting sulfenamides are stable and can be conveniently analyzed by HPLC using ultraviolet or electrochemical detection. (Copyright (c) 1989 American Chemical Society.)
