Abstract
A three-dimensional model of temperatures and currents has been formulated to assist in the analysis and interpretation of the dynamics of stratified lakes. In this model, nonlinear eddy coefficients for viscosity and conductivities are included. A two-dimensional model (one vertical and one horizontal coordinate) which includes coriolis forces, has also been formulated. Specific examples have been calculated using both models to show the general characteristics of thermocline formation, maintenance and decay. In order to understand the effect of various parameters, as well as the influence of basin geometry, extensive numerical experimentation has first been performed using the two-dimensional mode.
