Abstract
The feasibility of using fish as bioassay organisms to detect mutagenic/carcinogenic substances in the aquatic environment was tested. The data in fish were compared to those in higher vertebrates including humans. Microsomal fractions from livers of channel catfish, fathead minnow, bluegill sunfish, brown bullhead, rainbow trout, and mummichogs were studied to determine the presence and relative amounts/activities of microsomal protein, cytochromes P-450 and b5, NADPH cytochrome C reductase, aminopyrine demethylase, and aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase. The effects, both morphologic (upon the endoplasmic reticulum) and biochemical, of exposure to known MFOS including agents, PCBs, benzo(a)pyrene, and 3-methylcholanthrene were studied.
