Abstract | This report describes the systematic evaluation of series of parameters leading to the development of a test procedure for six priority pollutant phthalate esters in wastewaters. A study of the effect of pH, temperature, and residual chlorine on the aqueous stability of the compounds leads to recommended preservation techniques. Solvent extraction procedures, gas chromatographic column packings, GC detectors and cleanup procedures are examined and optimized. The resulting test procedure is applied to selected wastewaters to develop accuracy and precision data. The study included the following compounds: dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate, bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and benzylbutyl phthalate. |
