Abstract |
The potential remobilization of pollutants during dredging and disposal of contaminated sediments is of principal concern to environmental managers in the selection of dredging methods and disposal options. In the study, the authors describe methods for estimation of pollutant transport within New Bedford Harbor (NBH), an urbanized estuary between the cities of New Bedford and Fairhaven, MA. On eight separate dates corresponding to various dredging activities, current velocity and total suspended solids (TSS) profiles were taken across a narrow constriction (separating the upper and lower harbor) in conjunction with chemical sampling for dissolved and particulate PCB analyses. Three methods of estimating PCB transport were compared. |
