Abstract
The two-electron reduction of molecular oxygen to hydrogen peroxide can be catalyzed by semiconductor particles in the presence of visible and near-UV light. While very high quantum yields for the process are generally observed, rather low steady-state concentrations of H2O2 are also often encountered. Detailed mechanisms are presented to explain these experimental findings. Semiconducting metal oxide particles are abundant in hydrometers and surface waters and the environmental impact of a photocatalytic formation of H2O2 in natural systems is discussed.
