Abstract
The report gives results of studies of the causes of instability of the nitrification process as observed in steel industry wastewaters. Theoretical calculations, based on laboratory defined parameters, suggest allowable concentrations of trace inhibitors and operational strategies for stable nitrification of industrial wastewaters. Free ammonia is a function of wastewater total ammonia, pH, and temperature; thus, pH and temperature may be varied independently to ensure stable nitrification in wastewaters containing significant total ammonia levels.
