Abstract
This document is one of a series prepared for the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to assist it in determining those petrochemical processes for which standards should be promulgated. A total of nine petrochemicals produced by twelve distinctly different processes has been selected for this type of in-depth study. A combination of expert knowledge and an industry survey was used to select these processes. This volume covers the manufacture of phthalic anhydride from ortho-xylene. Included is a process and industry description, an engineering description of available emission control systems, the cost of these systems, and the financial impact of emission control on the industry. Also presented are suggested air episode procedures and plant inspection procedures.
