Abstract
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has a program to demonstrate practical, cost effective methods to reduce indoor radon concentrations in housing to 150 Bq/cu m (4 pCi/L) or less. The complete program will evaluate the full range of radon reduction methods, i.e., house ventilation, sealing of entry routes, soil ventilation, radon removal from water, and air-cleaning in the full range of housing sub-structure types and building styles, and geological conditions across the continental United States. The program described in the report demonstrated certain radon reduction methods in housing and geology typical of southern Ohio in particular, and the central Great Plains States in general. The testing of radon mitigation systems in Ohio houses is envisioned as taking place in two phases. The report describes Phase 1, which was carried out in 16 existing houses in the Dayton area during the 1987-1988 heating season.
