Abstract
Efforts to obtain a comparison between rats and humans of the dose of inhaled ozone (O3) delivered to the lungs during O3 exposure has been impeded because of the lack of data on the nasopharyngeal removal of O3 in rats. The present study sought to address the need through use of a newly developed tracing technique that involved oxygen-18 labeled O3 ((18)O3). Comparison of the result to a published value of about 40 percent nasopharyngeal removal in the resting human, yields the conclusion that the O3 concentration in the rat trachea is about 30 percent higher than in the human trachea under similar exposure conditions.
