An emission inventory was conducted during 1963-1964 as part of the St. Louis East St. Louis Interstate Air Pollution Study. Population density and land-use maps, which provide an excellent index to the areal distribution of most pollutant emissions, are presented. The pollutants considered in this survey are those emitted in large quantities from a variety and multitude of sources dispersed throughout the area. Included are aldehydes, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides (caluculated as nitrogen dioxide), sulfur oxides (calculated as sulfur dioxide), particulates, and benzo(a) pyrene (B(a)P). The emissions of other pollutants are generally associated with a specific process or operation and, in general, are not distributed throughout the community. The sources of air pollution in the Study area may be subdivided into the five following general categories: Fuel combusion in stationary plants; combustion of refuse material; fuel combustion in transportation vehicles; industrial process emissions; and, solvent evaporation. Emission factors are also included.
