Abstract
Field tests of reverse osmosis (RO) were conducted on copper cyanide rinse waters at two different sites: Whyco Chromium Co. and New England Plating Co. At both sites, closed-loop treatment was used with plating chemicals recycled to the bath and purified water recycled to the rinsing operation. The objective of the tests was to establish, under actual plating conditions, the feasibility of RO treatment for copper cyanide plating wastes. It was concluded that RO can be used to close the loop in copper cyanide plating. However, care must be taken to insure that adequate membrane life can be achieved. Where membrane life approaches that in traditional RO applications, the capital and operating costs for RO, compared to those for alternative treatment processes, are attractive. The cost attractiveness of RO depends on several factors specific for each installation. Bases for assessing capital costs, operating costs, and process credits are presented.
