Abstract
Two ion trap mass spectrometers and direct air sampling interfaces are being evaluated in the laboratory for monitoring toxic air pollutants in real time. The mass spectrometers are the large, laboratory-based Finnigan MAT ion trap (ITMS trademark) and the compact, field-deployable Teledyne 3DQ Discovery (trademark) ion trap. Both instruments are equipped with filtered noise field (FNF) technology, which minimizes the effects due to space charging normally associated with ion traps, provides a unique means of isolating individual target compounds in complex mixtures, and permits tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) operation for unambiguous characterization of individual compounds with high sensitivity and specificity.
