Abstract
An investigation was made into the biological effects of metallic and organic pollution in the Coeur d'Alene - Spokane River Lake drainage system in the states of Washington and Idaho. The following studies are described: The measurement of the trace metallic elememts in the water and sediments; Sampling of the bottom invertebrate organisms to determine community composition and density as related to metal concentrations in the sediments; The measurement by neutron activation and atomic absorption methods of the trace-metal concentration in tissues of selected aquatic organisms; the measurement of the effects of added pollutants upon the growth of test algae; and the establishment of base-line data on phytoplankton composition and productivity as well as the water quality.
