Abstract |
This is the second in a series of reports aimed at introducing molecular genetic analyses to the fields of environmental assessment and monitoring. An understanding of the genetic diversity patterns of fish and wildlife populations brings critical new information to these types of analyses. One of the most important applications of genetic analyses is to evaluate population structure of resource populations. Virtually all species of fish and wildlife are subdivided into populations that are partially or completely reproductively isolated from each other. These populations are the fundamental ecological units that independently respond to changes in environmental condition. An understanding of this population structure is needed to fully describe the condition of resource populations and to implement informed environmental management options. |
