Abstract |
The effects of daily p.o. injections of 20 mg/kg lindane or 535 mg/kg neomycin for 14 or 35 days on nitroreductase and dechlorinase activity in the rat gastrointestinal tract were studied. Data indicate that while neomycin pretreatment inhibited the activity of both enzymes in the cecum at both times, it had no effect on the nitroreductase activity of the small intestine and only inhibited dechlorinase activity in the tissue after 2 weeks. In contrast, lindane, which had no effect on enzyme activity in the cecum, significantly reduced nitroreductase activity in the small intestine after pretreatment for 2 weeks and then produced a significant increase in both nitroreductase and dechlorinase activity after 5 weeks. |
