Abstract |
This report presents design procedures and guidelines for the selection of aeration equipment and dissolved (DO) control systems for activated sludge treatment plants. Aeration methods, equipment and application techniques are examined and selection procedures offered. Various DO control systems are described with recommendations for system applications to various aeration equipment types and process configurations. Performance, operational and maintenance data for aeration equipment and DO control systems for twelve activated sludge plants is presented. This information and other design recommendations in the report are used to develop automatic DO control systems for various size hypothetical activated sludge system configurations. The conclusion is drawn that the capital and operating costs of automatic DO control systems are justified for activated sludge plants larger than 1 mgd (44 cu dm) provided equipment is selected and applied in accordance with the guidelines of the design manual and a power cost equal to or greater than the national average power rate is applicable. |
