Abstract | A modification to EPA Reference Method 16 was developed to eliminate known deficiencies in the analysis of total reduced sulfur (TRS) from stationary sources at kraft pulp mills. The modifications include: (1) The addition of a cold, citrate buffer gas scrubbing solution at the source, (2) The elimination of the need for a heated sample system and a dilution system, (3) Elimination of the need for two GC systems, (4) Changing the GC separation columns and valving to eliminate interference from CO2, COS, and SO2, (5) Finding a method for checking the linearity of the calibration curve. The proposed method was field evaluated by testing a lime kiln, a recovery boiler, and a smelt dissolving tank vent at a kraft pulp mill. The proposed method produced accurate results from each source. |
