Abstract
The objective of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of an in-situ across-the-stack optical technique to measure the mass of particulate emissions from stationary sources. The technique uses small angle light scattering and transmittance to determine a quantity closely related to particulate mass concentration. The forward scattered light is measured at an angle of 1 deg or less. The technique has been investigated both theoretically using Mie theory, and experimentally using aerosols produced in the laboratory. The experimental results agree with the theoretical predictions and indicate that the method is relatively insensitive to changes in aerosol parameters such as particle size, refractive index, and shape.
