Abstract
Smog chamber methodology was reviewed with respect to its present status and utility in developing photochemical pollution control strategies. Measurement of NO and O3 in chamber atmospheres was judged to be satisfactory; measurement of NO2, non-methane hydrocarbon, and sulfate presented problems. Surface effects and background contamination problems were minimal in large (hundreds of cubic feet) chambers made of Teflon film. Compared to indoor chambers, outdoor chamber operations were less costly and yielded more valid data in some respects. Specific sets of smog chamber data were used to estimate oxidant-related control requirements for California's South Coast Air Basin. Such estimates were judged to be more useful relative to those based on aerometric data analysis in that the role of NOx in oxidant formation was considered quantitatively. Other applications of smog chamber methodology in photochemical air pollution research were discussed.
