Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate the removal of Giardia lamblia cysts and cyst-sized particles by coagulation/sedimentation and filtration, or direct filtration using 2.3 L/min (0.6 gpm) pilot plants and by diatomaceous earth (DE) filtration using a 3.8 L/min DE pilot filter. The units were located at the University of Washington. The results were verified through field testing using a 75 L/min (20 gpm) pilot unit. The study noted greater than 99.9% removal of spiked cysts under optimum conditions.
