Abstract
The recent Michigan incident, in which livestock feed was contaminated by polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs), prompted this investigation. This report reviews the technical and commercial history of PBBs and also gives a general overview of the production, consumption and ultimate fate of these compounds. A detailed discussion of the manufacturing process and consumption patterns identifies possible points of entry of PBBs into the environment. A summary of air emissions, and the technology involved is discussed; and the ultimate disposal of liquid and solid waste material was investigated. Finally, a cost/performance analysis of alternative flame retardant is presented.
