Abstract
An analysis of the etiologies and causes of 302 waterborne outbreaks occurring in individual water systems during 1920-80 showed Streptococcus typhi to be the most commonly identified pathogen and use of contaminated, untreated well water the major cause of these outbreaks. These outbreaks resulted in 6701 illnesses and 224 deaths and occurred primarily during June, July, August, and September.
