Abstract |
The catalog was developed to aid in defining the environmental impacts of U.S. industrial activity. The phosphate rock and basic fertilizer materials industry produces primarily large-tonnage quantities of both finished fertilizers and basic intermediates for fertilizers. The industry includes companies and processes that produce end products derived from phosphate rock having uses other than as fertilizers. The industry is discussed in eight operations: phosphate rock processing; ammonia synthesis; production of ammonia sulfate, amonium nitrate, and urea; production of potassium nitrate and liquid chlorine; production of ammonium phosphate and nitric phosphate; production of mixed fertilizers; production of elemental phosphorus and furnace acid; and production of sodium phosphates and calcium phosphates. One segment of the industry is distinguished as, and entitled, 'Elemental Phosphorus and Furnace Acid Segment.' One chemical tree, eight process flow sheets, and 45 process descriptions characterize the industry. For each process description, available data is presented on input materials, operating parameters, utility requirements, and waste streams. Related information, provided as appendices, includes company, product and raw material data. |
