Abstract
This report presents national and regional trends in air quality through 1977 for total suspended particulate, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide and oxidants. The change in the number of people exposed to air quality levels above the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) is emphasized. Changes in air quality levels are discussed for the Nation, the Northeast Corridor, extending from Washington, D.C. to Boston and two selected metropolitan areas: Greater Cleveland and St. Louis. Air quality monitoring during 1977 is presented in terms of the number of reporting stations by pollutant and measurement method and their status with respect to the NAAQS. A unique feature of this report is the presentation of emission density maps, by county. Nationwide emissions for the period 1970-1977 are also presented.
