Abstract |
This two-volume report assesses the current status of using mined-space for long-term retention of nonradioactive hazardous waste. Volume 2 expands the definition of mined space to include that created by solution mining of salt. This report examines the extent of salt deposits in the continental United States, relates the salt deposits to waste generating regions, examines the variances in salt chemistry for the various deposits, describes the methods for creating solution mined caverns, discusses design and operation considerations, discusses projects proposed by industry, discusses advantages of the concept, and discusses needed research. |
