Abstract
The review focuses on the interactions, not only of bromide and chlorine, but also of bromide and two common oxidation alternatives to chlorine--chlorine dioxide and monochloramine. The data evaluations include discussions of reaction products, potentials for trihalomethane (THM) formation, bromide incorporation into complex organics, and reaction kinetics and thermodynamics. Based on evaluation of data, areas requiring new or intensified research efforts are identified. An additional goal is to present all available data on the alternative treatment oxidants so that their applicability in treating bromide-containing source waters can be realistically evaluated. A discussion of the ozone-bromide system is presented elsewhere.
