Abstract
The need for methods to estimate total number of living bacteria in environmental samples, including specific pathogens in aquatic systems, has not been met and therefore remains a continuing public health concern. The paper describes microbiological methods employed in measuring water quality to indicate the extent of contamination by human domestic wastes. Coliform bacteria, in general, remain the indicator organisms of choice to date. (Copyright (c) 1987, American Society for Microbiology.)
