| Abstract | Many small and rural water systems have both cost and quality problems. Their unit costs tend to be higher because of the small number of connections they service. As shown by the Community Water Supply Survey of 1969 many small systems have trouble meeting minimal drinking water standards. Their problems are likely to be compounded in the future as drinking water standards are raised. The cost of building a conventional water treatment plant to provide higher quality water for a small community may be prohibitive. Package water treatment plants are a possible alternative to conventional water treatment. These plants are self-contained units that can be installed for minimum cost. Results from a study of 36 package plants in Kentucky, West Virginia and Tennessee show that these treatment plants can provide water that meets the turbidity limits established under the National Interim Primary Drinking Water Standards. |
