Abstract | In order to assess adverse health effects caused by an event resulting in high levels of cadmium in drinking water, rats received CdCl2 by gavage or in drinking water for 1 or 10 days. The reported acute oral LD50 in rats (225 mg/kg - Kotsonis and Klaassen, 1977) was confirmed. Male and female Sprague-Dawley derived rats received CdCl2 by gavage at doses of 25, 51, 107 and 225 mg/kg body weight for 10 consecutive days. Other rats received CdCl2 solutions at concentrations of 0.014, 0.14 and 0.29 mg/ml. There were naive and vehicle controls. Compound related adverse effects were noted on body weights (decrease) and BUN. Histopathologic lesions, apparently compound related, were observed in the testis, kidney and liver of gavaged animals but not in the animals that received CdCl2 in the drinking water. |
