Abstract |
Water is collected in a polyethylene or glass container and shipped to the laboratory. Known aliquots of the sample are filtered through a 0.1 to 0.22 micrometer pore mixed cellulose ester (MCE). A carbon extraction replica is prepared from a portion of the filter and is examined in the TEM at a magnification of 10,000 to 20,000X. Asbestos structures are identified by morphology, selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and energy dispersive x-ray analysis (EDXA). Structures are classified according to the counting rules specified in the Chatfield polycarbonate filter protocol (1). Only asbestos structures greater than 10 micrometers in length are counted. |
