Abstract
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed this document to assist CERCLA remedial project managers (RPMs) and human health and ecological risk assessors during the remedial investigation process to evaluate back- ground concentrations at CERCLA sites. An issue that is often raised at CERCLA sites is whether a reliable representation of background has been established. This document recommends statistical methods for characterizing background concentrations of chemicals in soil.
