Abstract | Important missions of the U.S. EPA are to enhance understanding of the global environmental system and to develop tools to help environmental policy decision making. Three-dimensional air quality models used by EPA are examples of such tools. In the EPA's Models-3 project, we attempt to develop a new comprehensive and flexible air quality modeling system that is amenable to modification, revision, and different applications. In this paper, we describe our use of software engineering approaches for the development of air quality model prototypes, including science templates, a model builder, and source code management tools that take advantage of developments in science and high performance computing and communication (HPCC) architectures. |
