Abstract
For several years, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has used the Remote Optical Sensing of Emissions (ROSE) system to characterize the gaseous pollutants emitted by a variety of point and extended area sources. The purpose of this program was to extend the data base of this versatile and promising pollutant sensor by comparing the data generated by the ROSE system with data generated by standard techniques for the sampling and analysis of hydrogen fluoride. The program was divided into five phases including a literature review, pretest survey, sampling and analytical trials in the laboratory, preliminary field phase, and the final, collaborative field phase. The field sampling efforts were conducted along gypsum ponds at two phosphate fertilizer facilities. For the formal sampling phase, both the double filter cassette and sodium bicarbonate-coated tube were used for the point sampling. The point sampling effort was conducted simultaneously with the operation of the ROSE system.
