Abstract
The paper gives results of an evaluation of three different multimetal continuous emission monitors (CEMs) currently under development within several U.S. government programs. Seven metals and a tracer metal were injected, as an aqueous spray, into the secondary combustion chamber of EPA's rotary kiln incinerator simulator (RKIS). The RKIS was operated at carefully controlled conditions during the test period. Flyash from a coal-fired boiler was also injected to simulate the particulate loading expected in a real waste combustion environment, and to challenge the CEMs by providing representative spectral interferants. The CEMs and EPA reference method sampling probes were located in the duct downstream from the secondary combustion chamber. Three different metals concentrations were injected, based on proposed EPA emission limits for waste combustion, to achieve high, medium, and low metals concentrations in the duct.
