Abstract
Relationships between photoplankton dynamics and changing water quality in New York Harbor were studied from 1974-1978. The study was to determine if removal of suspected toxic substances by advanced wastewater treatment, without simultaneous removal of excess dissolved nutrients (N and P) would result in nuisance phytoplankton blooms. Observations suggest that stresses induced by poor water quality reduce potential productivity of diatoms in the estuary.
