Abstract
Publicly-owned wastewater treatment lagoons are in extensive use throughout the United States today. However, the long term data needed to conduct a proper evaluation of lagoon design to meet Federal Secondary Treatment Standards have been lacking. This report presents the data collected over a one-year monitoring period of the Windber, Pennsylvania, treatment facility. The Windber treatment system was found to perform very well. Federal Secondary Treatment Standards for suspended solids, fecal coliform pH and BOD5 were consistently met. Through the project, the BOD removal was excellent except for the month of July. This appeared to be related to the 'solids upset' of Cell Number 1. In addition to BOD, several other parameters were affected by the 'solids upset' of Cell Number 1. In addition to the parameters for which Federal Standards have been established, many others were monitored and are presented in summary form along with a complete listing of all the data gathered during the study period. As a result of this study, it is apparent that this well-designed, aerated, multi-celled lagoon system is certainly capable of meeting the July 1977 secondary treatment standards, under the conditions prevailing at the time of this study.
