Abstract
The criteria presented in the document are the U.S. EPA's best recommendation of the concentrations of a substance that may be present in sediment while still protecting benthic organisms from the effects of that substance. These criteria are applicable to a variety of freshwater and marine sediments because they are based on the biologically available concentration of the substance in sediments. The document presents the theoretical basis and the supporting data relevant to the derivation of the Sediment Quality Criteria (SQC) for phenanthrene.
