Abstract |
This report presents procedures and criteria for selecting appropriate locations for carbon monoxide (CO) monitoring stations. The purposes for which CO concentrations are measured are reviewed and classified according to a system based on special scales of representativeness. Procedures are given for selecting locations that will provide CO measurements representative of downtown street canyon areas, along major traffic corridors, urban neighborhoods, and larger interurban regions. Specific recommendations are included for inlet heights, distances from major and minor roadways and placement relative to urban areas. The rationale behind the specific recommendations is given. Appendices discuss sources of information useful to the site selection process, such as climatological data, land use information, and traffic data. A bibliography is also included. It is classified according to monitoring purposes and scales of representativeness. A computer program designed to identify 'worst-case' conditions and the relative contributions of sources at different distances is presented. |
