Abstract |
Pollutants emitted into the atmosphere are transported for various distances and any later deposit in aquatic systems far removed from their original sources. This atmospheric deposition may seriously degrade water quality. In this paper, we first summarize the current understanding of atmospheric depositional processes for trace elements, mercury, nitrogen, and synthetic and combustion-derived organic contaminants. After addressing the question of whether gross contaminant loadings from the atmosphere can be estimated, we address whether both the conceptual understanding and the necessary data to construct defensible mass balances of these chemicals in the Great Waters are available. |
