Abstract |
The movement of two herbicides in runoff and on sediment were studied as examples of pesticides in general use. Gas chromatography was used to determine the losses of atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-triazine) and dichlobenil (2,6-dichlorobenzonitrile) from fallow plots on four Coastal Plain soil types following the application of about 13 cm (5 in.) of rainfall in two hours. The herbicides, as wettable powders, were surface-applied and incorporated. Simulated high intensity (a 100-year frequency storm) rainfall was started one hour after application. The greatest combined (runoff plus sediment) losses of atrazine in all soils and of dichlobenil in two soils occurred during the first 40-50 minutes of runoff. (Modified author abstract) |
