Abstract
Besides old landfills, the Response Action Program remediates former industrial sites where soil and groundwater contamination threaten public health and the environment and where no other party takes full responsibility for the cleanup. In 1999, the Response Action Program directed the cleanups of over 50 sites, remediating a total of 45 acres throughout the state. This program is an environmental safety net, stepping in to clean up sites that no one nor any other regulatory cleanup program will accept. As this report will show, the Response Action Program performs a much needed function in Illinois.
