Abstract
The development and application of in vitro alternatives designed to reduce or replace the use of animals, or to lessen the distress and discomfort of laboratory animals, is a rapidly developing trend in toxicology. The proliferation of new methods is stimulated by continuing advancements in both cellular and molecular biology, and bioanalytical and computer techniques. For the foreseeable future, the rate of development of new methods can be expected to increase. The document represents a formal administrative process to organize, coordinate and evaluate validation activities.
