Abstract
A study has been carried out to determine the relative significance of the major sources type-residential, commercial, industrial-contributions of priority pollutants to POTW influents. A service area in each of four cities--Cincinnati, St. Louis, Atlanta, and Hartford--has been studied in detail. In each city, specific sampling sites were selected to represent each of the major source categories. In total, 11 residential, 10 commercial and 5 industrial sites have been sampled, in addition to the tap water and POTW influents. This report presents a summary analysis of the data made possible by integrating the results obtained from each of the cities and treating the data by source category. The data have been analyzed to determine the frequency of occurrence of toxic pollutants (specifically the list of 129 priority pollutants), their concentration levels, the sources of these pollutants, and the impact of the source contributions on the POTW influent. Manganese and several classical parameters (7XX series) were also measured and included in the data base. The analysis has been carried out within the constraints imposed by the inherent characteristics of each of the major source categories - residential, commercial, industrial - concerning the range of discharge levels which was observed for each category.
