"Liberty Lake, a 316 hectare lake in Eastern Washington was successfully treated with 93.4 metric tons of aluminum sulfate in the fall of 1974. The October treatment was aimed at reducing nutrients being released from deteriorating weed beds. The treatment eliminated massive fall blooms of Anabaena flos-aquae and Aphanizomenon flos-aquae for two years. Three years after treatment another blue green, Coelosphaerium naegelianum appeared for a short period as a surface scum in November, 1976. No adverse ecological effects were detected other than slightly increased growth of aquatic macrophytes."--Abstract. |
