Abstract
The investigation of selected heavy metal (Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Cu, Zn) partition coefficients between the suspended and dissolved load of streams and the relation to the mineralogical make-up of the suspended load has not been properly evaluated. Trace element chemistry can provide background and/or seasonal data of critical importance for determining the real or potential pollution levels in streams. Unfortunately, natural abundance figures for selected elements of streams in different geologic environments are not readily available. The report was conducted to shed some light onto the effect of the suspended load on water quality and on the geochemistry of the dissolved load of streams under natural conditions. Samples were collected monthly from selected sites on several major Kansas streams and were analysed for the named elements and mineralogical composition of suspended load. (Author)
