Abstract
Data presented in this report collected during the seventh year of a research program designed to assess ambient toxicity of living resource habitats in Chesapeake Bay. The goals of this study were to identify toxic ambient areas in the Chesapeake Bay watershed by using a battery of standardized, directly mnodified, or recently developed water column and sediment toxicity tests concurrently with fish and benthic community assessments (index of biotic integrity approaches). The toxicity of ambient estuarine water and sediment was evaluated during the late summer/early fall of 1997 at eight stations in the following areas: Elizabeth River (four stations) and South River (four stations). Both inorganic and organic contaminants were assessed in ambient sediment and inorganic contaminants were measured in ambient water concurrently with toxicity testing to assess 'possible' causes of toxicity. Both fish and benthic communities were also assessed at the eight stations. An index of biotic integrity was determined for each trophic group. Both univariate and multivariate (using all endpoints) statistical techniques were used to analyze the water column and sediment toxicity data.
